FAQ

Sitemap generator FAQ

What is an XML sitemap for?

It lists the URLs you want search engines to crawl and index, along with hints like when each page last changed. It helps Google and Bing discover pages faster, especially on new sites or deep pages with few internal links.

How do I submit my sitemap?

Upload it to your site root as /sitemap.xml, then add it in Google Search Console under Sitemaps and add a Sitemap line to your robots.txt. Bing Webmaster Tools works the same way.

What should priority and changefreq be?

They are hints, not commands, and Google largely ignores them. Keep priority relative (your homepage higher than deep pages) and set changefreq to roughly how often the page really updates. Accurate lastmod dates are the most useful signal.

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

Up to 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed. Beyond that, split into multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index file.
