Across all 91 overviews, 257 different domains were cited and 72% of them appeared only once, a very long tail. Small sites like onelittleweb.com (9 citations) were cited more often than Ahrefs (7).

The headline finding: AI Overviews are now universal for SEO queries, they cite only a handful of sources each, and most of those sources are not big brands. Getting cited is about how a page is written, not how large the site is.

1. AI Overviews are the default, not the exception

All 91 informational queries in this study returned an AI Overview. For anyone writing SEO, GEO, or AI-marketing content, the AI answer is now the top of the page, above the classic blue links. Optimizing only for a ranked link means optimizing for the part of the page many searchers no longer reach.

2. Only about five sources make each answer

Each overview cited 5.5 unique domains on average. That is a narrower funnel than the ten organic results: the competition is to be one of roughly five sources the model stitches its answer from. A page that resolves the question in one clean, quotable passage has a real shot at that slot even without a top-three ranking.

3. You do not need high authority to be cited

This is the most useful finding for a newer site. 89.5% of the cited domains were independent sites rather than household-name brands, and 72% of all cited domains appeared exactly once. Small SEO agencies and niche tools were cited repeatedly, sometimes more often than the biggest names in the space. Authority helps a page get discovered, but the citation itself goes to whichever page answers the question most directly. Structure beats size.

4. Community content punches above its weight

YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn together made up 16.5% of all citations, with YouTube cited in more than half of the overviews. Answer engines lean on first-hand, experience-based content. A presence in the right communities, and video that directly answers a question, is part of a citation strategy, not separate from it.

What the cited pages have in common

Reading the pages that got cited, the pattern is consistent. They open with a direct, self-contained answer in the first sentence or two. They use question-based headings that match how people ask. They state specific, extractable facts rather than hedging. And they cover the topic thoroughly enough that a model can lift one clean passage and trust the rest. That is the whole of it: answer first, structure clearly, be specific.

Methodology

We selected 91 informational keywords across SEO, generative engine optimization, and AI-marketing topics, then queried Google US desktop results through the DataForSEO SERP API in August 2026. For each query we recorded whether an AI Overview appeared and extracted the domain of every cited source. Percentages are computed over the cited-domain set. AI Overviews are dynamic and personalized, so figures reflect this sample at this point in time and will shift. You are welcome to cite these figures with a link to this page.

FAQ

AI Overview citations: key questions

How often do SEO queries show an AI Overview?

In this study, all 91 informational SEO and GEO queries returned an AI Overview, a 100% rate. For this category of query, an AI Overview is now the default, not the exception.

How many sources does an AI Overview cite?

An average of 5.5 unique domains per overview in this sample. Google pulls from a small handful of sources for each answer, so the competition is for one of about five spots, not a top-ten ranking.

Do you need high domain authority to get cited by AI Overviews?

No. 89.5% of the cited domains were independent sites rather than major brands, and 72% of all cited domains appeared only once. Small and new sites are cited frequently when a page answers the question directly and cleanly. Content structure matters more than raw authority.

What kind of content gets cited most?

Two things stood out: community content (YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn made up 16.5% of citations), and focused informational pages that open with a direct, self-contained answer. Pages that lead with the answer, use question-based headings, and state specific facts get lifted most often.

How was this study run?

We queried Google's US desktop results for 91 informational SEO, GEO, and AI-marketing keywords via the DataForSEO SERP API in August 2026, then extracted the cited source domains from each AI Overview. Numbers reflect that sample and that moment; AI Overviews change over time.
